Boat no.1 – Aaltje

So this little lady was built around the turn of the last century and converted as a rich family’s plaything in the 30s. She’s a sailing tjalk so very rounded bow and stern; 20m long and 4.8m wide with leeboards and copious sails (of course). She’s been run for years by the current owners as a mini hotel boat, taking advantage of the copious cabins&berths to accommodate up to 11people at a go. It’s very pretty with lots of character but it feels very small; the kitchen’s tiny and although most of the rooms have a sink there’s no bathroom to speak of at all, so much work is needed to make it liveable (for us at least). Headroom is also quite snug if you’re 6’3″. Overall we’d give it 5/10 for our purposes and hope we can find something better suited to our needs for our money…
